Neighborhood Health and Well-Being:

Keeping It Simple:

What is an Elder?

Keeping It Simple:    If you are 9 years old, you can be an elder to a 7-year-old.

So, you’re right: anyone can be an elder. You can begin being an elder in elementary school. After that,  you can become an elder at any age!

Being an elder is essentially making a difference in the life of another person who is younger than you, or, in the life of an individual who is facing a situation that you have faced!

What is a Healthy Local Community?

Keeping It Simple:   A healthy local community is any place where people are behaving as elders in their local community. They are seeking to make a difference for their face-to-face neighbors than are living where they are living.

Keeping It Simple;  Yes, in Blue Zones people have direct face-to-face relationships with their neighbors.   They enjoy doing the things together that will make a difference with and for their neighbors.

Keeping It Simple:  In any and all Blue Zones, and communities that are like Blue Zones – on a daily basis:

  • People eat fresh local food together!
  • People find many ways to move their bodies together!
  • People know how to have fun together; to enjoy each other!
  • And, people find many different ways to make a difference in the lives of their neighbors!

What is a Blue Zone?

Keeping It Simple:   People who live in  Blue Zones tend to be “happy!”  How’s that for keeping it simple!!!  People in Blue Zones do not live in “isolation” to their neighbors, as most people do in the United States. (See studies cited by Vivek H. Murthy, MD Surgeon General US) And, so people who live in blue zones tend to be healthier and live longer.

Keeping It Simple Summary: People in Blue Zones live with the purpose of making a difference in the lives of other people who are living in their local community; they enjoy eating, moving, and having fun helping each other, i.e. behaving as “elders” with their neighbors!!!
